Hacienda San Jose
La construcción de esta vivienda de gruesas paredes de adobe y techos de teja, se remonta a tiempos de la Colonia. Primero perteneció a Isabel, hija de Sebastián de Benalcázar. Luego pasó a manos de José de Grijalva, nombrado alcalde de Ibarra por el Rey de España, a Juan José Flores, primer presidente del Ecuador, y al historiador Jacinto Jijón y Caamaño. Pero desde hace 40 años la propiedad -que bordean las 1000 ha de terreno, con aproximadamente 20 000 metros de construcciones- pertenece a la familia Salvador. La propiedad incluye el Ingenio San José, el primero del país. Inicialmente en sus predios florecía la caña de azúcar. Luego, tras el cierre del ingenio en 1993, la hacienda se dedicó a la producción de flores de exportación. Posteriormente incursionó en la cría de ganado vacuno y caballar. Hoy produce leche. Y, en algún momento, alcanzó la cifra de 10 000 litros de por día. Es una casa llena de historia. Tiene un complejo de tolas de más de 5 000 años. También una planta hidroeléctrica. La casa fue escenario incluso de una película: ‘Solo de Guitarra’, del cineasta César Carmigniani.
The construction of this housing thick adobe walls and tile roofs, dating back to colonial times. It first belonged to Elizabeth, daughter of Sebastian Benalcázar. El nombre de esta propiedad proviene del apellido de su madre, Isabel López de la Flor. La hacienda de 320 hectáreas, dotada de una casa antigua, ha pasado por varios dueños. Entre ellos se cuenta el capitán de Eloy Alfaro, Rafael Rosales. Se dice que el Viejo Luchador visitaba regularmente esta vivienda y que ahí habría planificado varias de sus estrategias durante la Revolución Liberal. La hacienda la heredaron posteriormente las hijas de Rafael Rosales, Isabel y Magdalena. Por esos tiempos, en los terrenos florecían la caña de azúcar y el algodón, destinado para la creciente industria textil. El actual propietario es Fernando Madera, ex corredor de autos y ex diputado de Imbabura. En los últimos años se mantuvo básicamente la producción de caña de azúcar y los cultivos de fréjol. Pero la actividad agrícola prácticamente se paralizó. Porque al igual que en seis haciendas más, declaradas de utilidad pública por el Estado, hay incertidumbre.

La Reserva Ecológica de El Ángel está ubicada en la provincia de Carchi, en la región sierra norte del Ecuador, en las parroquias La Libertad y el Ángel del cantón Espejo; Tufiño y Maldonado en el cantón Tulcán y la Concepción en el cantón Mira. Posee una extensión de 16541 ha, abarcando altitudes que van desde los 3400 hasta los 4200msnm, con suelos que retienen una gran cantidad de agua, por lo que es considerada como una verdadera "esponja" que abastece del líquido vital a toda la provincia del Carchi. Fue declarada Reserva Nacional de Conservación Ecológica desde el año 1986, e incluida dentro de las 35 áreas sobresalientes del Sistema Ecuatoriano de Áreas Protegidas, mediante Acuerdo Ministerial 0415 publicado en el Registro Oficial No 21 del 8 de septiembre de 1992.
